The new electric car subsidy scheme supports private individuals in purchasing or leasing a new vehicle of EU vehicle class M1, registered in Germany for the first time, with a purely battery-electric powertrain or certain vehicles with an externally chargeable hybrid powertrain (plug-in hybrids and range extenders).
The specified income limit is a maximum of EUR 80,000 in taxable annual household income. The income limit is increased by EUR 5,000 per child for up to two children (under the age of 18). For families with two or more children, the limit is therefore a maximum of EUR 90,000 in taxable annual household income.
Vehicles first registered after 1 January 2026 are eligible for the grant. Applications for the grant are expected to be available online for the first time in May 2026. The grant can be applied for retrospectively; the decisive factor is the date of first registration after 1 January 2026. The subsidy amount is tiered and can be up to 6,000 EUR.
